A very special terroir for an outstanding wine

The first appellation contrôlée created by Baron Le Roy in 1923, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the unchallenged king of the Rhône Valley crus. With a history dating back to the XIV century when the village became the Papal summer residence, it is situated between the great centres of Orange and Avignon.

The Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes wines owe their very special characteristics to the complex, varied soils which stretch over 20 hectares (50 acres) of hillside north-west of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Forming a natural mosaic of land parcels, the soil is made up of limestone pebbles in the valleys, with terraces of flinty rolled pebbles mixed with sandy red clay. When combined with the vineyard's incredible exposure to the elements (the sun, the mistral wind) these soils produce grapes with different characteristics which, when blended, result in a powerful wine that exemplifies the character of the appellation.

On the eye, it is deep and intense. Spice and fruit on the complex nose are enhanced by hints of game. In the mouth it is extraordinarily rich, with red fruit aromas combining in an intense, deep bouquet. Those whose palates thrive on strong wines will thrill to this characterful wine.

When served at between 16° and 18°C, a young Clos de l'Oratoire is ideal to drink with red mullet and basil, whilst a more mature one would be perfect with a rich venison stew. Lay it down for 8-10 years: you'll enjoy it even more.
